Later, the restaurant relocated to its current home on Kiyamachi Street, just a short distance from Gion and Shijo Kawaramachi, adopting the name " Honke Tankuma Honten." For nearly a century, the restaurant has adhered to its philosophy of serving "Monmo na Kyoryori," meaning "authentic Kyoto cuisine." We focus on simplicity and refinement, removing any excess to fully highlight the natural essence of carefully selected ingredients.

One of the most notable features of this restaurant is that it is the only Michelin-starred washoku restaurant with Halal certification by the Kyoto Halal Council. Guests can choose from four exclusive Halal courses: "Halal Vegan Kaiseki" "Halal Wagyu and Local Chicken Course," "Halal Kaiseki," and "Halal Special Kaiseki." In addition to Halal options, the restaurant also offers a "Shojin Kaiseki" for vegetarians and vegans, as well as a "Kosher Kaiseki" tailored to Jewish dietary laws, welcoming guests from around the world.

Nestled along the Kamogawa River, near Gion and Kawaramachi, " "Honke Tankuma Honten" is a long-established Kyoto cuisine restaurant founded in 1928. With nearly a century of history, it has continued to craft seasonal Kyoto dishes that emphasize the natural flavors of carefully selected, premium ingredients.

Mr. Junichi Kurisu, the young proprietor, has traveled to 75 countries since his student days, visiting Islamic regions and nations with significant Muslim populations. During his journeys to countries like Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan, he became fascinated with their rich cultures and the tradition of hospitality toward travelers. Inspired by these experiences, he began studying Halal practices to deepen his knowledge. In 2014, before Halal was widely recognized in Japan, his restaurant became a certified establishment under the Kyoto Halal Council.
Today, in addition to offering "Halal Courses" for Muslim guests, the restaurant also provides "Shojin Kaiseki" for vegetarians and vegans, as well as "Kosher Kaiseki" for Jewish guests, warmly welcoming diners from around the globe. The Halal courses are meticulously crafted, avoiding pork and alcohol-based ingredients. They feature A5-grade Halal Wagyu beef and premium domestically sourced Halal chicken, along with Halal-certified seasonings to ensure authenticity.

Four Halal courses are available for reservation. The "Halal Vegan Kaiseki" is an 11-dish course made entirely with vegetables. The "Halal Wagyu-beef and Halal Japanese Chicken Course" consists of 9 dishes featuring premium Halal Wagyu beef and Halal-certified japanese chicken. The "Halal Kaiseki Course" is a 10-dish course focusing on seafood and Kyoto vegetables, while the "Halal Special Kaiseki Course" offers 11 dishes, including charcoal-grilled Halal Wagyu beef.
The course includes hassun(appetizer), tsukuri(raw fish), wanmono(soup), takiawase(Japanese style stew), and other quintessential Kyoto specialties, offering an authentic experience of Kyoto cuisine at its finest.

The photo showcases an example from the "Halal Special Kaiseki Course." The "Halal Japanese Chicken and Vegetable Tempura" features tempura made with Halal-certified local chicken, paired with traditional Kyoto vegetables such as Manganji peppers and Kamo eggplant. The dipping sauce, including soy sauce and other seasonings, is entirely free of alcohol. The "Charcoal-grilled Wagyu-beef (halal)" uses only A5-grade premium Wagyu beef, with the charcoal grilling enhancing its rich flavors. The dish is complemented by seasonal delights such as sweetened green plums.

"During my student days, I traveled the world and was warmly welcomed by Muslim people, which inspired me to learn about Halal. The reason for incorporating Halal was not for business purposes but because I genuinely love Islamic culture and its people. I wanted more Muslims to experience authentic Kyoto cuisine. I believe that connecting with people and offering them hospitality is the most important thing.
If you are looking to enjoy truly Halal Kyoto cuisine, please visit our restaurant. We warmly welcome you. We also serve A5-grade Halal Wagyu-beef and Halal Japanese Chicken, ensuring that you enjoy the finest dishes," says Mr. Kurisu.
This is one of the few Kyoto cuisine establishments that rigorously uses carefully selected Halal-certified ingredients.
